Sometimes it’s nice to get away just for the weekend. You don’t always want to hop on a long flight when you need to relax and take some time for yourself.
The good news is that the UK is full of unique places that you can get to quickly, and which will provide you with all of the rest, recuperation and fun times that you desire, all in a single weekend.
London
If you do not already live in London, then there is no denying it is a great place to get away to when you have a free weekend and you are looking for adventure.
The great thing about London is that it really does have something for everyone, so whether you’re looking to take in dinner and a show, relax in a luxurious hotel spa or spend some time exploring the history of the place, you will not be disappointed.
From the Natural History Museum to Harrods, you can pack your weekend with so many cool experiences that you will never feel bored.
Farne Islands
If you take the time to visit Farne Islands off the coast of Northumberland, you will not be disappointed. Not only is it a place of great natural beauty, and home to one of the largest great seal populations in the world, but it is also home to a large puffin settlement too.
If that was not enough, there is Lindisfarne, or the Holy Island, as it is sometimes referred to with its rugged beauty and interesting historical ruins.
This is one of those places you should visit when you want to get back to nature, relax and enjoy a sandy beach or spend time thinking about it all. Take a cruise around the islands at sunset and you cannot fail to be blown away.
The Peak District
The Peak District is a stunning part of the UK for travellers, stretching, as it does, across the Pennines and home to some of the most wonderful landscapes in the whole of England.
This National Park is home to some of the prettiest villages with tons of history, some of the most walkable hills and dales and no small number of fantastic stately homes where you can stay in the lap of luxury.
If you love quaint cafes, bracing walks and historical sites, you will not be disappointed by the Peak District.
The Lake District
The Lake District in Cumbria is home to some of the UK’s tallest mountains, and as the name suggests, it has more bodies of water than almost anywhere else in the country too.
When you are not admiring the splendour of nature in all of its extremes, you can try ziplining through the forest at great height, sampling the local delicacy that is Cumberland sausage, and checking out one of the many great museums including the famous Keswick Pencil Museum, which is a lot more interesting than you might imagine.
The Isle of Sky
There are a lot of wonderful Scottish islands that would definitely be worth your time, but the Isle of Sky is undoubtedly one of the most enchanting. Its enchanting beauty with the Cuillin mountains and rolling grasslands is hard to beat as is the food at the wonderful Three Chimney restaurant which in its more than four decades has become something of a magnet for tourists.
If you’re looking for somewhere impressive to stay, then The Black Shed log cabin, with its birdseye view of Loch Dunvegan, will set the right tone for rest, recuperation and romance if you can tear yourself away from the hills that is.
Edinburgh
If you’re more of a city break kind of guy or girl, then Edinburgh in Scotland is an excellent choice. With an atmosphere that buzzes just as much as London, this historic city is full of historical gems like the imposing Edinburgh Castle, but has just as much to offer lovers of modernity with its many bars, restaurants and cultural highlights such as the National Museum of Scotland. Be sure to try some of the famous Scotch whiskey.
Donegal
Donegal in Ireland is a beautiful coastal area with lots to do and see. It is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in Britain, many of which are part of the Wild Atlantic Way, so if you’re a lover of sand, sea and rugged vistas, it is a great place to unwind, try some wild swimming and commune with nature.
It is also home to some quaint thatched cottages, many of which are available for rent year-round, and of course, the Irish people you will meet along the way are some of the funniest, warmest people you will ever meet, so be sure to hit the pub for a well-deserved pint of Guinness or two after a weekend of exploring the coast.
York
York is a great place to go if you love to shop. It is home to a number of amazing independent stores where you can buy everything from the famous Yorkshire Parking to unique designer clothing.
Of course, York is also one of the UK’s oldest cities, which means there is plenty of culture to soak up too. The Yorvik Centre is particularly interesting due to its focus on the Vikings, but there is so much more to the city than that!
Bath
If it’s luxury you are looking for, Bath with its many soothing spas and quaint shops and cafes is hard to beat. Spend some time delving into the Roman architecture and leafy green spaces and the world will just melt away. Come evening time, hit the bars and you will find lots of fun to be had if that’s your thing.
As you can see, the UK is brimming with interesting places that are perfect for weekend breaks no matter whether you are looking for relaxation adventure or a bit of both, so what are you waiting for there? Get out there and explore all the UK has to offer one weekend at a time!
