Both teams last played against each other just a year ago in prelim play at the 2023 World Juniors in Halifax. Connor Bedard tied a Canadian record with seven points (3-4—7), and Dylan Guenther recorded a hat trick in an 11-2 Canadian win.

The loss against Canada marked the first time Canada got shut out in a WJHC game since a 2-0 defeat to the United States in the 2021 gold medal game. Mathis Rousseau made 22 saves, including a couple of highlight-reel stops, but it wasn’t enough.
Projected 2024 No. 1 draft pick Macklin Celebrini is leading Canada in scoring and is tied for second in the tournament with two goals and six points in three games.
Arizona Coyotes prospect Conor Geekie has two goals and three points, while both Coyotes prospect Maveric Lamoureux and New Jersey Devils prospect Miles Wood have a goal and three points.
On the other hand, Germany started the tournament with a 4-3 victory over Finland but trailed off since then, losing 5-0 to Sweden on Thursday and suffering a disappointing 6-2 defeat to Latvia on Saturday.
With one win and two losses, they sit tied for third in the group with Finland and Latvia and need at least an overtime loss to ensure they don’t finish last.
Germany’s offence has been the main reason behind its poor campaign, registering only six goals in three games, the joint-fewest tally in the tournament. They have barely mustered scoring chances, registering just 66 shots on goal, 23 fewer than any other team.
Forward Viet Oswald leads the Germans with two goals in the tournament, while forwards Erick Hordler and Kevin Bicker also have two points each.
Players to Watch:
No price for guessing this one. Mathis Rousseau, the 19-year-old undrafted Halifax Mooseheads netminder, is the player to watch from Canada. He is currently second among goaltenders in goals-against average (1.33) and save percentage (.944)
The Germans don’t have an incredible roster like Canada, but they do have 19-year-old NHL prospect Julian Lutz (Arizona, 2022, 43rd overall), who has 23 points (10-13-23) in 19 games with the Green Bay Gamblers of the USHL.
