Boxing history will be made on Saturday night in Riyadh when WBC champion Tyson Fury and unified champion Oleksandr Usyk take on each other in one of the biggest, most anticipated fights in boxing’s recent history.
It will be the first time two heavyweight champions had fought for all four titles since 1999 when the British fighter won all three world titles. Since then, the WBO has been elevated to full world title status.

It’s been a long time coming after a couple of delays, but the fight night has finally approached. The highly-anticipated bout had initially been scheduled to take place in Saudi Arabia in February but was postponed after the Briton suffered a “freak cut” above an eye.

Lineal champion Fury holds the WBC title, while Usyk holds the WBA, WBO, IBF, and Ring Magazine straps (all of which will be up for grabs).
Usyk is looking to become the first man in history to win undisputed titles at both cruiserweight and heavyweight divisions, and he’s just one win away. On the Fury vs Usyk undercard, there are nine fights scheduled to take place, including two more world title bouts.

Tyson Fury:
- Nationality: British
- Born: August 12, 1988
- Height: 6′ 9″
- Reach: 85″
- Stance: Orthodox
- Record: 34-0-1 (24 KOs)
Fury is the reigning two-time world and lineal champion who is undefeated in his 35-fight professional career. After becoming a unified champion with a career-defining win over Wladimir Klitschko in 2015, Fury was out of the ring for three years as he struggled with mental health and substance abuse problems.
He returned to action to once again rule the division with successive knockout wins against long-reigning WBC champion Deontay Wilder in 2020 and 2021 after their first bout ended in a controversial draw.
Since then, the 35-year-old Gypsy King has reeled off three more wins, although he narrowly escaped embarrassment with a split-decision win against MMA star and boxing novice Francis Ngannou in his last bout in October. He was even knocked down by a left hook from the former UDC champion in the 3rd round. Good for him; his WBC world title was not on the line.
Oleksandr Usyk:
- Nationality: Ukrainian
- Born: January 17, 1987
- Height: 6′ 3″
- Reach: 78″
- Stance: Southpaw
- Record: 21-0 (14 KOs)
On the other hand, Ukrainian fighter also enters the ring undefeated from his 21 professional bouts. He has made a name for himself at cruiserweight, where he became the undisputed world champion and arguably the finest fighter in the division’s history.
After stepping up to the heavyweight division and after a couple of adjustment fights, the 37-year-old Ukrainian challenged AJ for the unified world titles in 2021 and totally outclassed the champion. He then retained his titles in a rematch 11 months later, albeit in a much closer bout that ended up in a split decision.
Last August, he made one more successful title defense against Daniel Dubois in Poland. However, he had to survive being floored by a controversial blow. He was left shaking and stayed down for almost four minutes after being caught just below the belt. His stoppage was the 14th of his professional caterer, taking his record to 21-0.
Fury vs Usyk: What has been said?
“If I win, it could be my last bout in this division,” Usyk said.
“Maybe I will go back to cruiserweight and win.”
“I feel incredible, as good as I did at the 2012 Olympic Games. Just as young and energetic, and with a big desire to move forward.”
“It’s the most important fight of my career, my sports career, and my sporting life. I want to say that my victory is the victory of the entire Ukrainian people. And defeat is personal.”
“I was worried about Tyson Fury, that there might be injuries and that our fight might not take place,” he added.
“If he was performing, I think he deserves an Oscar. It has to happen because we have a contract. It’s a problem only for Tyson Fury. He signed a contract, so he has to fight. It has been an incredible journey. I can do anything now.”
In an interview, Fury said:
“I’m not too concerned about what people are going to be saying in 100 years. The dust from our bones won’t exist in 100 years, never mind what they say about a boxing match in 100 years.”
On his tactics, Fury confirmed his plan of dominating the smaller man with his size and power:
“I’m looking to do a demolition job on him,” he said.
“I just want to beat the silly sausage. Yes, Usyk is fast and talented, and he out-boxed a big heavyweight in Anthony Joshua twice, but AJ is one-dimensional, one-paced, and I could outbox him with a blindfold on. I’m just different.”
Who is on the undercard?
Fury vs Usyk undercard features nine bouts, led by the IBF cruiserweight world title rematch between three-time champion Mairis Briedis and Australian sensation Jai Opetaia. Unbeaten Opetaia beat Briedis on points when both faced each other for the first time two years ago. He was later stripped of the title after failing to fight his mandatory challenger and would be aiming to become a two-time world champion now.
Before this bout will be the first world title fight of the night where undefeated IBF super-featherweight world champion Joe Cordina will make a second defense of his belt in an all-British bout as he takes on Belfast’s IBO World Champion Anthony Cacace (21-1, 7KOs).
Also on the undercard, former light heavyweight king Sergey Kovalev will continue his cruiserweight run by taking on the unbeaten Robin Sirwan Safar.
