He pursued a career in genomic programming for personal reasons.
“Many of my family members are diabetic and at high risk for diabetes,” Raghavakaimal says. “My father and a brother died of cancer. That really inspired me to focus on these areas. Both diabetes and cancer are genetic diseases.”
With a Bachelor’s degree in Science from the University of Kerala, Raghavakaimal embarked on a journey of academic excellence that would ultimately shape his career trajectory. His insatiable thirst for knowledge led him to pursue advanced studies in chemistry, culminating in a Master’s degree in 1987.
“I got my PhD in Chemistry from the Indian Institute of Technology in Chennai, India. I came to the University of Wisconsin-Madison to complete my post-doctoral training in Bioorganic Chemistry and Physiology. I started enjoying the genomic programs related to diabetes and cancer to find a cure.”

However, it was during his doctoral studies at the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, that Dr. Raghavakaimal found his calling. “Scientists used low throughput assays to understand the molecular causes in these diseases. Then, Human genomes were sequenced in 2001. That presented an unprecedented opportunity for clinicians and scientists to understand the molecular basis for many diseases, including diabetes and cancer.”

Throughout his academic career, Raghavakaimal has explored various scientific fields and research interests, with an intensive focus on diabetes, cancer, and aging. His interests include the pathophysiologic study of liver diseases such as non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), Hepatitis C, and Hepatocellular carcinoma (Liver Cancer), as well as the genetic and proteomic (relating to proteins) bases for complex genetic diseases.
