Raval Indian Brasserie & Bar has claimed the title of Best Indian Fine Dining Restaurant Outside London at the highly anticipated 2024 Asian Curry Awards. The ceremony, hosted on Sunday, 17th November 2024, at Grosvenor House in London, honoured the best in Asian cuisine from across the UK.
This remarkable achievement saw Raval outshine Michelin-starred venues in London, such as Benares in Mayfair and Amaya in Knightsbridge. The win represents a defining moment for Newcastle Gateshead and the North of England, demonstrating that world-class fine dining exists far beyond the capital.
Kahani in Sloane Square took the crown for Best Indian Fine Dining Restaurant in London, while Raval’s triumph in the “Outside London” category highlighted the growing influence of regional talent in the Indian culinary scene.
Indian cuisine has become deeply ingrained in British culture, evolving over centuries to secure its place as a national favourite. From the opening of Britain’s first curry house in 1810 to the present day, the curry industry has grown into a £7.5 billion sector, employing more than 100,000 people. Millions of Britons visit curry houses, recreate Indian dishes at home, or purchase pre-made options from supermarkets every week.
The Asian Curry Awards, widely known as the “Curry Oscars,” celebrate this enduring legacy while shining a spotlight on the culinary pioneers shaping its future. This year’s finalists included over 200 establishments representing 14 Asian cuisines, ranging from Thai and Japanese to Vietnamese, highlighting the UK’s diverse appreciation of Asian gastronomy.
“Winning this award isn’t just about Raval; it’s about showcasing the North of England’s growing reputation as a culinary destination,” said Nas Islam, Manager at Raval Indian Brasserie & Bar. “To stand alongside Michelin-starred venues and represent Newcastle Gateshead on a national stage is an honour. We’re proud to show that fine dining thrives outside London.”
Chair of the Asian Catering Federation, Yawar Khan, praised the winners, saying: “The quality of competition this year was exceptional. Raval’s win underscores the incredible talent flourishing outside London. Kahani’s success in London and Raval’s in Newcastle together showcase the diversity and brilliance of Indian fine dining across the UK.”
Raval’s culinary success lies in its innovative fusion of traditional Indian flavours with contemporary British influences. Signature dishes such as Lobster & Mango and Darjeeling Lamb Cutlets epitomise the restaurant’s creative vision, while its seven-course tasting menu continues to push boundaries in Indian fine dining.
In the weeks leading up to the awards, Raval’s chefs devoted countless hours to refining their dishes. “Our head chef even drew inspiration from his grandmother’s spice blend for the lamb cutlets,” Islam explained. “That personal connection to our roots while innovating for modern palates is what sets Raval apart.”
This award adds to Raval’s growing list of accolades. In October 2024, it was recognised as Best Indian Restaurant Outside London by the British Indian Good Food Guide. Media outlets have also applauded the restaurant:
- The Sun hailed Raval as “a curry house in Newcastle that stands out for its exceptional quality and innovation.”
- Time Out named Raval among the UK’s 20 Best Indian Restaurants, celebrating its bold approach to fine dining.
