The Margarita has triumphed as the UK’s favourite cocktail, but it seems that Brits are keen on adding an adventurous twist to their drinks by incorporating Bushtucker trial-style ingredients.
According to a recent study, 36% of individuals are willing to experiment with unconventional ingredients in their tequila-based beverages. These daring additions range from fiery hot chillies to fermented fruit, squid ink, and even bee pollen.
Surprisingly, 18% of respondents expressed an interest in including crunchy grasshoppers in their Margarita, while a bold 14% were open to the idea of adding crunchy dried scorpions. Other unconventional toppings that caught the attention of participants were dried insect larvae worms (14%) and squid ink (16%).
Altos Tequila, the brand behind the study, surveyed 2,000 adults across the country to gain insights into the evolving British palate. In response to these findings, they have introduced a range of Margarita ice lollies with intriguing and questionable flavour combinations.
Among these creations, one stands out—classic, frosty margarita lollies with the addition of grasshoppers and tequila-infused mealworms. Another lolly offers a picante margarita experience by combining chilli and coriander.
However, for those with more conventional tastes, Altos Tequila also offers lollies in lime and watermelon flavours.
Simon Hodgson, Brand Ambassador at Altos Tequila, commented on the trend: “As the UK gets more inspired by different cultures, we’re seeing an increasing trend of unique ingredients being experimented with in our food and drink, especially cocktails. The Mexican margarita is one of the most versatile cocktails out there, so we can’t wait to offer tequila fans our new range of margarita lollies, with some very special twists, as a new way to cool down this summer.”
