Forget the traditional ruffs and quills—Shakespeare is getting a festival makeover in Brighton this February! Local theatre company Witwerks Theatre is thrilled to present “Twelfth Night: The Remix,” an electrifying adaptation of the Bard’s timeless comedy, brimming with music, glitter, and revelry.
In this imaginative retelling, twins Viola and Sebastian find themselves separated after an unforgettable night at Illyria Fest. Stranded with no phone, no money, and a pounding hangover, Viola must rely on a drag performer’s help to disguise herself as a boy, allowing her to stay at the festival and search for her lost brother.
Chance Dean, the show’s director, producer, and writer, drew inspiration from his own festival experiences: “I was lucky enough to grow up in Glastonbury Town and have been to the festival many times. That love of the festival scene and the raucousness, music and otherworldly-feel that you can only find there has inspired a lot of my work. We sold out this show ten years ago in London and my love of Shakespeare and music festivals has only grown since then, so I wanted to bring this brilliant show to a fresh new audience.”
The production will run from 6th to 9th February 2025 at The Actors Pub in Brighton. The cast is made up entirely of Brighton-based talent, showcasing the city’s thriving artistic scene and ensuring a truly local flavour to this unique adaptation.
Sascha Cooper, who stars as Maria, described her excitement about playing the role: “Playing Maria in Twelfth Night is a dream come true for me in this wonderful production. Expect a lot of scheming from Maria as I get to play her darker side, as opposed to just the saucy wench she is normally portrayed as. Witwerks Theatre has really opened my eyes to how accessible Shakespeare can be, and I can’t wait for everyone to see this fun, sassy show.”
