Games have evolved significantly over the centuries, especially as technology has continued to develop and transform. Some games that we play today still look a lot like their older versions, and there are others that couldn’t have existed at all before the advent of modern computers.
Casinos as an establishment only really came about in the 15th century, even though there were gaming venues before then. But they’ve evolved a long way too, thanks to the move online, with players now able to play Plinko and other games from their own computer or mobile screen.
So, join us as we take a look at the way that casino games and gaming in general have evolved over time.
The early days of gaming
People have been playing games since ancient times. Historians have uncovered evidence of games dating back to roughly 2300 BC in China. The Greeks and Romans were also civilisations that played a variety of games of chance, often using dice and simple board game elements.
Card games were a rather later addition to the gaming landscape, as they required more advanced production techniques than dice and carved game pieces.
The birth of the casino
While there were certainly dedicated gaming establishments before it, the modern casino can trace its roots firmly back to 15th-century Europe. Renaissance Italy was the birthplace of the casino, with Venice’s Ridotto established as the first government-sanctioned casino in 1638. It offered card games and a lottery game, but not the ones that we’d normally associate with casinos today.
It was in the 18th century that many of the games we consider casino classics started to emerge. Roulette took to the stage, going on to become the centrepiece of the famous Monte Carlo Casino on its opening in 1865 alongside other well-established table games.
Thanks to its popularity in French gaming parlours and Monaco’s casino, Roulette spread across Europe and the US. While it diverged into a few major formats – European, French and American – the game became a staple of casino gaming.
Poker also began to catch on in the early 19th century, evolving from a combination of various older European card games. Along the length of the Mississippi River, the game found its footing, developing into what we now know as one of the most popular card games globally.
The modern casino
Slot machines were introduced to casinos during the early 20th century, adding another game to the expanding roster. The relatively simple gameplay – compared to table games with complicated rules and etiquette – saw Slots soon rise to the top of the pile in terms of popularity.
Over the course of the century, slot machines transformed from purely mechanical cabinets to electromechanical and fully electronic machines. Removing the physical reels helped to create games that were easier to regulate, with the game’s computer utilising random number generation (RNG) to ensure truly fair and random results.
Possibly the biggest leap forward for casino games came with the 90s and the shift towards online gaming. Some games found it easier to make the leap to a purely digital format than others, although most of the classics can now be found online.
As technology improved, online casinos also began to incorporate live-streaming elements into their games, so that players could experience live dealer games of Roulette, Blackjack and others on their screens.
