The Secretary of State has appointed a new Interim Chair of the UK’s Gambling Commission. Charles Counsell OBE is expected to start his nine-month-long term on 1 February 2025.
These changes came after Marcus Boyle’s decision to step down from the leading position. His term as the Chair of the UK’s Gambling Commission will end on 31 January 2025. During his tenure, Boyle reached some incredible milestones, as he launched the fourth National Lottery license and oversaw the implementation of the Gambling Act Review, which aimed to reduce the chances of gambling harm.
Providing a safe gaming experience is one of the main goals of the Gambling Commission, as is visible in its actions and policies that are player-centric. All online operators who the Commission regulates are expected to be on GamStop, which is a self-exclusion scheme that ensures players stay safe by giving them a chance to ban themselves from casino games in case they start going over their limits.
The self-exclusion option is intended to be used by individuals who notice they are spending too much time and money on casino games; however, many players will jump the gun too soon and get banned from casino games for as long as a year.
Players who resort to the self-exclusion option too soon don’t have to worry – they can still access casino games on reliable, non-Gamstop websites. These websites hold licenses from other countries and, according to Card Player’s rankings, there are quite a few of them that are secure and available in the UK – and all of them provide a more flexible gambling experience.
While playing on non-GamStop casinos does require some research to ensure the site’s legitimacy and security, playing on GamStop sites comes with a lot more safety and predictability – safety that’s a direct result of Boyle’s term as the Commission’s Chair.
Boyle’s hard work and commitment to the industry leave the Commission in a solid position. With a three-year-long strategy that outlines planned advancements up until 2027, the Commission has a lot to look forward to.
Now that Charles Counsell OBE is about to start his term, things are looking even more promising. His impressive accomplishments include a CEO position at The Pensions Regulator, which he held from April 2019 to March 2023. His accomplishments as the CEO were remarkable, since he delivered two important strategies – the first Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion strategy and the Climate Change strategy.
Before his notable results as The Pensions Regulator’s CEO, Charles also served as the CEO of the Money Advice Service, showing he’s no stranger to roles that come with a lot of responsibility.
As the new Interim Chair, he will once again step into the spotlight, for which he will be remunerated £55,000 per year. That’s well above the UK’s mean yearly salary, which amounts to £36,834.
Marcus Boyle’s colleagues at the Gambling Commission have openly talked about their happiness to have been able to work with Boyle, along with their gratitude for his remarkable devotion to the Commission. They wish him all the best in his future endeavors and hold hope that the new Interim Chair will do just as good of a job.
