In January 2024, audio-visual artist LEOW (DIAN WANG) gained international recognition for his short film The Path of Stones. The film received an Honorable Mention at the International Independent Film Awards (IIFA) in the United States and the Best Documentary Music Video Award at the Parai Musical International Awards (PMIA) in India. By blending innovative technology with compelling storytelling, the film highlights the rich cultural heritage of Zhejiang’s Jinyun County and reflects LEOW’s interdisciplinary approach to creativity.
The Path of Stones: A Visual Poem Engraving Memories
Set against the backdrop of the traditional stone quarrying culture of Jinyun County in Zhejiang, The Path of Stones traces the development of this craft from the Song Dynasty to the late 20th century. The film captures the daily lives and labor of stonemasons, whose work helped shape the bridges, streets, and homes of the region. Drawing from rare archival footage from the 1990s, LEOW reconstructed their stories, breathing new life into a piece of history that had faded with time.
LEOW utilized artificial intelligence and generative visual technology to restore and enhance the old footage to 4K resolution, projecting it onto the quarry ruins in vivid detail. “These fragmented images are like pieces of time, forgotten over the years. Through the power of technology, they are given a new lease on life, allowing the stories of the stonemasons to be told once more,” LEOW said. Accompanied by his original music, the sound reverberates through the quarry, evoking echoes of the past and lending the visuals a profound emotional depth.
This film is not only a depiction of the stonemasons’ lives but also a testament to their enduring relationship with the mountains. The stones they carved were not merely tools of livelihood but also the foundation of their dreams and aspirations.
International Recognition: Praise from IIFA and PMIA
The International Independent Film Awards (IIFA) is a globally respected platform recognizing innovation and artistic excellence in independent filmmaking. The Path of Stones earned an Honorable Mention in the Experimental Film category for its poetic exploration of memory and history. The jury noted that the film “injects a fresh perspective into experimental cinema by intertwining the forgotten past with the present through evocative imagery.”
The Parai Musical International Awards (PMIA), dedicated to the intersection of music and visual art, awarded The Path of Stones for its outstanding music video component. The film’s sound design, in harmony with the visual pacing, creates an immersive emotional atmosphere. The original score not only complements the narrative but also adds layers of depth and resonance, impressing the jury.
Pioneering Interdisciplinary Exploration
Through his work, LEOW continues to explore the intersection of tradition and innovation. As an artist with a background in data science, he integrates advanced technologies into his creative process, breaking boundaries between art and science. The success of The Path of Stones not only highlights his individual achievements but also demonstrates the growing acceptance of generative visual technology and interdisciplinary approaches in global art communities.
Looking ahead, LEOW plans to continue telling compelling stories through his innovative methods, bringing cultural heritage to life on an international stage.
