AMJ Players’ Championship playoff preview
It’s never too early to consider next season, especially when this weekend’s events could greatly influence it. Team John Epping has the chance to overtake Team Brad Gushue in the Canadian Team Ranking System (CTRS) and secure a pre-qualification berth for next year’s Montana’s Brier, which will be held from February 27 to March 8, 2026, in Gushue’s hometown of St. John’s.
Epping must win the AMJ Players’ Championship this weekend to earn enough points to surpass Gushue. “If we win this weekend, it would be amazing,” Epping remarked after the round-robin play concluded. “We’ll earn a spot in the Brier, but if not, we’ll be ready for the provincial playdowns.”
Curling Canada will announce pre-qualification details after the championship, with Team Brad Jacobs already secured as the defending champion. Epping currently sits at 238.75 points and needs a strong finish to increase his tally. His quarterfinal advancement in the AMJ Players’ Championship has already given him 30 points.
Epping has historical success as an underdog, having won the Players’ Championship in 2012 as the eighth seed after overcoming tough competitors. This season, he joined forces with Jake Horgan, Tanner Horgan, and Ian McMillan, achieving significant victories to qualify for this championship.
Ranked 10th in the world, Epping began the tournament strong, winning his first four matches. However, a 7-5 loss to Matt Dunstone in the final round-robin game prevented a bye to the semifinals. Epping is poised to face Jacobs in the quarterfinals, where he aims to secure a spot in the semifinals against reigning world champion Team Bruce Mouat.n!
