Tom Hugo has released a powerful new solo single, ‘Fade Out,’ a heartfelt collaboration with his husband, Alexander Olsson. The song delves into the emotional aftermath of a neo-Nazi demonstration against the LGBTQ+ community in Kristiansand, Norway, the hometown of the renowned singer and founding member of ever popular trio KEiiNO. ‘Fade Out’ articulates the anger and disillusionment experienced by the duo, shedding light on the pervasive sense of ‘second-class’ status among the LGBTQ+ community in regions where conservative ideologies hold sway, particularly in southern Norway.
The inspiration for ‘Fade Out’ stemmed from a disturbing incident when neo-Nazis, under police protection, protested against the LGBTQ+ community in Kristiansand. The song, a poignant expression of defiance and resilience, has already garnered significant media attention in Norway. Controversy erupted when two schools in Kristiansand initially canceled a concert featuring ‘Fade Out,’ citing concerns raised by a group of parents who falsely claimed the song equated Christians to Nazis. The incident triggered debates on mainstream media platforms in the country.
Tom Hugo, well-known as the lead member and composer of the chart-topping Eurovision favourites band KEiiNO, has ventured into solo work that captivates audiences with its authenticity and social relevance. ‘Fade Out’ follows Tom’s previous solo release, ‘Royal,’ which showcased a departure from the upbeat pop style of KEiiNO, presenting a more acoustic and introspective sound.
Reflecting on the inspiration behind his new solo works, Tom explains, “Isolated in my conservative hometown during the pandemic, I wrote a collection of songs inspired by stories from our own and other LGBTQ+ lives. I wanted to create songs that normalize being different and shine a light on those struggling to fit in.”
Tom and his husband Alex N.O., who collaboratively wrote the songs, aspire to foster acceptance of diversity through their music. Tom’s dedication to promoting inclusivity is not new; it has been a consistent thread throughout his career. From his solo endeavors to the sensational success of KEiiNO’s ‘Spirit In The Sky’ at Eurovision 2019, Tom Hugo has championed the cause of a more open and diverse world.
‘Fade Out’ is released out now and is available on all platforms
