Scheduled for January 14, 2024, the 29th Critics’ Choice Awards Red Carpet will unfold at the Barker Hangar, Santa Monica Airport, California, to commend outstanding achievements in filmmaking and television programming throughout 2023. Chelsea Handler will host the event for the second consecutive year, expressing her enthusiasm, “I am very happy and excited to be hosting the Critics Choice Awards again this year, as last year was one of the most fun nights I’ve had. There is no greater reward than making fun of actors and then getting drunk with them afterward. It’s an honor.”
Unlike previous years, nominations for films and television were disclosed separately, with television nominations announced on December 5, 2023, and film nominations on December 13, 2023. Originally slated for the recently revamped Fairmont Century Plaza Hotel, the home base of the Critics Choice Awards, the venue was later shifted back to Barker Hangar in Santa Monica. This adjustment aimed to mitigate risks associated with a labor dispute involving more than 50 Southern California hotels, including the Fairmont, with Unite Here Local 11. Joey Berlin, CCA CEO, regretfully stated, “We regret that a labor dispute has made it impossible for the 29th Annual Critics Choice Awards show to be held at the Fairmont Century Plaza, where it has enjoyed great success for the past two years. But we are happy to be able to return to the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, where our show has also enjoyed great success through the years.” Noteworthy among the nominations, “Barbie” secured a record-breaking eighteen nods, closely trailed by “Oppenheimer” and “Poor Things” with thirteen each. On the television front, “The Morning Show” led with six nominations, followed by “Succession” with five. The collaborative sensation “Barbenheimer” received a remarkable 31 nominations, highlighting its cultural impact and box office success. Overall, Warner Bros. claimed the lead in film nominations with 25, while HBO/Max dominated the television category with 23 nominations, marking the most for any studio and network this year, respectively.
