The 150th anniversary of Toscanini’s birth is being celebrated with an exhibition which opens on the 21st March. Entitled ‘Arturo Toscanini Life and legend of an immortal master’, the exhibition will be open until the 4th June.
The Teatro alla Scala in Milan will hold the exhibition in their museum. The theatre will also hold 1089 per person for Bed ^ Breakfast. a special concert on the 25th March for the anniversary. The theatre was inaugurated in 1778 and is Milan’s most important opera house.
The event is being publicised by Mandarin Oriental, a hotel group with a hotel in Milan a brief walk away from the theatre. They are working in partnership with Kirker Holidays in order to promote a two night stay in Milan costing £1089 per person for Bed & Breakfast stay. The price also includes return flights and transfers. Tickets for Toscanini’s 150th anniversary concert start from €121 per person.
Arturo Toscanini was an Italian conductor during the 19th and 20th century. He was at one point the musical director of La Scala Milan, the common abbreviation for the Teatro alla Scala in Milan. Toscanini was also the musical director of the Metropolitan Opera in New York as well as the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. He was the first musical director of the NBC Symphony Orchestra, which then made him a household name in America due to their radio and television broadcasts.
Toscanini is one of the 20th Century’s most acclaimed conductors and musicians. Toscanini raised the theatre to new heights during his time working there. One of Toscanini’s most significant reforms to La Scala Milan was to arrange for the orchestra to perform in the US between 1920-21 in a series of concerts. These concerts led to the process of dimming the lights into a performance still used widely today.
