Whenever you open the App Store or Google Play Store in the hope of finding a new gaming app, it’s easy to quickly become overwhelmed. There were over one million gaming apps on the App Store in July 2023, for example, and many of those will have been free to download.
If you know what you’re looking for it can be easy to navigate to a particular style of game. But what about if you want to try something different? How can you figure out which apps are worth your time and which are best to avoid? Consider these tips and hopefully you’ll find what you need:
Simplicity
Some of the best games are the most straightforward ones – it’s why you can still download things like Tetris and Pong!
If a gaming app requires a tutorial, the chances are that it’s not going to be the simplest game in the world to play.
Variety
Not all gaming apps give you access to a single game. For example, bingo apps often include a wide range of games to play. If you’re not in the mood for one thing, there may well be something else on the app that you find more appealing in the moment.
Good graphics
High-quality graphics can make your experience more immersive and enjoyable. If they aren’t developed to a high level, it’s easy to feel like the entire game just isn’t good enough. There’s always the odd exception, of course.
Cross-compatibility
If you’re more of a serious gamer, you’ll no doubt be attracted to games you can play across multiple platforms. Fortnite and Roblox are probably the most popular options. If you manage to find a game with cloud saving, you’ll potentially be able to play the same save across multiple devices too!
Gameplay
Some games that have been ported across to the App Store (i.e. not designed specifically as an app) may not provide the best gameplay experience. This can simply be down to something as simple as poorly designed controls. Gaming apps that are designed for a specific platform are more likely to work smoothly and therefore be more enjoyable.
Speed vs size
A bigger gaming app is likely going to require more processing power from your device. It’ll also probably take up more storage space. This can compromise the speed it runs at and how well your device performs.
Smaller downloads will run quicker, so be sure to check how much space will be required and consider whether it’s worth dealing with the side effects that could cause.
Choosing the right gaming app
Ultimately, this is down to your taste and preference at the time. But if you bear in mind the above factors when you’re next perusing your options, it’ll hopefully steer you in the right direction.
