It appears that researchers working for the confectionery giants Nestle might have discovered a way to reduce the sugar in its chocolate products by a staggering 40%, whilst promising it will have no impact on the great taste, in what is a fantastic development for chocolate lovers all over the world.
The researchers have reportedly found a way to structure the sugar in a different way that uses only natural ingredients, and these new findings could see most of Nestle’s products become healthier by 2018, so there may be no need to feel guilty about eating chocolate from that point on.
“This truly ground-breaking research is inspired by nature and has the potential to reduce total sugar by up to 40% in our confectionery” commented Stefan Catsicas, the chief technology officer at Nestle. “Our scientists have discovered a completely new way to use a traditional, natural ingredient.”
The amount of sugar that a lot of people are consuming in their diets is said to be the leading factor the increase in Type 2 diabetes which is linked to the obesity epidemic, and therefore the pressure has been mounting on confectionary companies to find new and innovative ways to make their products healthier, which Nestle certainly looks to be succeeding with.
With one of the largest research and development capabilities in the food and beverage industry, Nestle are in the prime position to be coming up with these new ways to make the products healthier, and this could just be the beginning of what the company is setting out to achieve.
It looks like further details on this will be revealed in the new year, but it seems that we will be thanking science in a couple of years for making eating chocolate both a tasty and healthy thing to do!
