Sales of vegan dishes at PizzaExpress are on the up, with the Giardiniera rapidly proving to be a firm favourite. So, we’re even more excited to announce the latest recruit to the PizzaExpress vegan menu: meet the incredible Puttanesca. This pizza features all the usual players of the classic Puttanesca – think olives, capers and red onions, but with a new star of the show – long-time vegan favourite, the mighty jackfruit.
Though this may seem an unlikely topping, jackfruit is a hugely popular meat substitute, having seen a 131% increase in popularity in 2017. Jackfruit, which is the largest tree fruit in the world, has a naturally distinctive texture, closely resembling pulled pork (it’s been known to fool even the most dedicated of meat-eaters!). It’s also incredibly versatile, taking on the flavour of whatever it’s cooked with – making it the perfect match for the punchy Puttanesca sauce. For the sceptics out there, there’s only one thing for it: you’re going to have to come and see what all the fuss is about.
What’s more, the vegan Puttanesca is the first vegan PizzaExpress pizza that is served on a Romana base; a thinner, crispier version of the ‘Classic’ base, it’s the perfect way to squeeze on even more toppings. The Puttanesca takes the total number of PizzaExpress dishes to a grand total of thirteen. The only problem now – which of our delicious vegan dishes to choose?
