Have you ever considered that you could be doing some good while having your morning cup of coffee? One brand is offering to help you do just that. It has been calculated that every hour, the tropical rainforest the size of 88 football pitches is cleared in order to make way for palm oil or a wide range of other invasive and intensive forms of industrial agriculture. This rapid decimation of the tropical rainforest is threatening the existence of native orangutans and farmers alike.
Orang Utan Coffee Project has been set up to fight back against this invasive work by offering a viable alternative for local farmers. The Orang Utan Project looks to make coffee farming a viable alternative to palm oil in order to help protect the Orangutan’s natural habitat. While this is ongoing, the project will also be working to provide much needed funds for the Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Programme, which has already successfully and safely rehabilitated more than 200 Orangutans.
The Coffee project is funded by the sales of Orang Utan Coffee, which is an 100% Arabica, single origin, single estate coffee. This coffee is available from Ocado and Waitrose. It has been calculated that for every kilogram of green coffee that local farmers produce they will receive a premium. As well as this there will be a donation made to the Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Programme which will help to cover around 4% of the programme’s yearly costs each time.
