It’s that time of year again. Christmas is just around the corner and for many of us Brits, this jolly period means more drinking and, unfortunately, more hangovers! So, what is your hangover cure? How do you recover from a big night out?
Whether it’s lazily whiling away the hours scrolling through your phone, binge watching a Netflix series, or seizing the day and getting some much-needed fresh air (if you’re one of those people), we all have hangover related traditions, and food is no exception, playing a big part of the cure for most of us.
To find out more, the award-winning* Manchester-based, burger delivery brand, Burgerism, has been busy surveying the nation to understand more about our takeaway habits. The survey**[1] revealed that one of the most popular hangover meals is a burger, which comes as no surprise to us – who wouldn’t enjoy a mouth-watering, yet readily convenient treat to soak up the antics from the night before?
Delving deeper into the findings, the survey also revealed that over half of people aged 25 to 34 are likely to order a burger after drinking the night before – a whopping 53% showed us that this age group are more likely to order a burger when hungover than any other!
Looking at the regional break down of the data..
We hear you, Manchester (39%), Liverpool (40%) and Cardiff (42%)! You are the most likely cities to hop on Deliveroo the morning after what should have been some ‘casual work drinks’ (we’ve all been there…) to treat yourself to a burger. And do you know what? We don’t blame you.
So, why burgers? Well, it turns out there is a science behind this choice of hangover meal after all. Eating foods that are high in protein is known to reduce the effects of a hangover, and red meat is famously protein rich. And what contains red meat, I hear you ask? You guessed it. Over half (52%) of the UK voted for a beef patty when asked their burger of choice when ordering a takeaway. Scientifically proven to help, and delicious, you really can’t go wrong!
Sure, eating greasy foods may be more of a ‘quick fix’ to relieve yourself from feeling rough the morning after. But is this such a bad thing? When we asked our survey participants how they felt when ordering and eating a restaurant quality burger, their responses ranged from satisfied (38%), happy (34%) and excited (19%). That is 91% of you sharing that you feel better when eating a burger. We hear you, and we couldn’t agree more.
Next time you’re out with friends and can practically feel tomorrow morning’s headache setting in, fear not. Join over half of the UK’s population in treating yourself to a delicious, smashed patty.
