In another quarterfinal at the 2024 World Juniors Championship, the No. 1 seed team from Group B (USA) takes on the fourth-ranked team from Group A (Latvia).
USA is heading to the preliminary round as the only unbeaten team in the tournament and will bag more goals as they face Latvia from Group A.
This age group of Latvia has created some issues for other teams, but against the top-tier teams, they’ve failed to fight in the last year or so.

USA vs Latvia Preview:
No. 1B USA (3-1-0-0)
The USA has been dominant from the start of the tournament. They beat Norway (4-1), Switzerland (11-3), Czechia (4-3) and Slovakia (10-2) with highest goal difference (20) by any team. Aside from Czechia pushing them to a shootout in a game where few key American players were absent with the flu, this team has been a wagon.
In four games, USA has scored a tournament-leading 29 goals, with Gavin Brindley (Columbus Blue Jackets) leading with six goals. Frank Nazar (eight assists) and Cutter Gauthier (1-7) are tied with Brindley for the team lead with eight points. On the back end, Lane Hutson hasn’t shown his best game yet, but Zeev Buium and Ryan Chesley have been solid.
A decision to make for the USA ahead of this game will be on who the No.1 goalie will be. Trey Augustine (DET) and Jacob Fowler (MTL) have started twice. Augustine is the incumbent starter and has played very well, while Fowler has been quite good.
No. 4A Latvia (1-0-0-3)
Latvia lost three games, to Finland, Canada, and Sweden, by a combined score of 20-0, but thanks to a massive win (6-2) against Germany (their only win in the prelim round), they managed to qualify to the medal round on tie-breaking edge.
Latvia has scored six goals (the fewest by any team) and has a -16 goal difference. They have allowed the second most goals against, have the worst power play, and second-worst penalty kill.
Latvia’s leading scorers, Sandis Vilmanis and Dans Locmelis, are the only two drafted players on the roster. Sandis Vilmanis leads the team with three points (two goals, one assist) in the preliminary round.
Both have done what they can, but even they’ve overmatched in most games. All their goals came against Germany, as the Latvians failed to score outside that game.
Players To Watch:
Cutter Gauthier, C, USA (PHI):
Cutter Gauthier finally netted his first goal of the tournament. He’s a goal scorer, first and foremost, but he has made many plays throughout the tournament. After finally scoring a goal, the floodgate could open, especially against a team that has bled goals in all but one game this tournament.
Sandis Vilmanis, C, Latvia (FLA):
Vilmanis has been one of the leaders of this age group for a long time and is the only player with more than one goal on Latvia’s roster. Playing in his final World Juniors, he would like to end his journey with a memorable performance.
