Now the Olympic Games have come to a close, many of us are reflecting on the epic sporting moments of the last few weeks. However, it’s the Olympic village’s viral sweet treat which has left perhaps the biggest mark on the UK.
Self-proclaimed Olympic Village Muffin Man, otherwise known as swimmer Henrik Christiansen, has boosted interest in triple chocolate muffins after his series of TikTok videos highlighting the snack went viral. According to the official caterer of the Olympic village, over 2,000 of Christiansen’s favourite muffins are consumed every day by athletes.
Now, recipe box HelloFresh reveals that Google searches for ‘Olympic chocolate muffin recipe’ are up 150% in the past seven days across the UK, with other chocolate muffin-related terms also seeing a huge spike.
In response to the demand, Senior Recipe Development Manager, Mimi Morley has shared some lesser-known additions for your bakes to rival the top secret recipe.
Sour cream
“Adding a touch of sour cream adds moisture to your batter while providing a bit of a tang to counterbalance the sweetness of your chocolate” suggests Mimi. Henrik’s much-loved muffins boasted a fluffy and moist texture and this tip is sure to help you achieve the same end result.
Instant coffee
Mimi’s next tip is perfect for those who enjoy a caffeine boost, “add a teaspoon of instant coffee to your batter to enhance the bold flavours of your dark chocolate notes.”
Balsamic vinegar
If you fancy opting for something a little bit more high-brow, then balsamic vinegar is the perfect addition according to Mimi. “The balsamic adds a sharpness to your muffins and is best paired with a very dark chocolate to achieve these flavours. As they’re much richer I’d recommend serving in smaller portions for a chocolate muffin that packs a punch.”
Orange zest
Lastly, Mimi suggests opting for a tried and tested combination. “It’s never too early to enjoy chocolate orange! The citrusy notes of grated orange zest add a refreshing twist on classic chocolate muffins.”
