There’s History And Bad Blood Between USA Hockey Vs. Sweden
Few consider Sweden and the United States to be rivals, but they most definitely are now. Particularly for the U20 and U18 divisions.
Both the 2022 World Men’s Under-18 Championship and the 2023 U18s featured a large number of players from both teams, and some participated in both events. In 2022, Sweden emerged victorious, preventing a formidable American squad from winning the championship match of their NTDP careers. With a goal in overtime from Ryan Leonard (WSH) and a great performance from Trey Augustine (DET), USA won the gold medal the previous year.
After his team made it to the semifinals, USA captain Rutger McGroarty (WPG) said, “We don’t like those guys over there.” “We’re going to make it personal; this will be a highly charged game.”
Among the many players on this squad who were born in 2004 and went through the heartache of the 2022 World Men’s Under-18 final is McGroarty. They haven’t forgotten, for sure.
The 2004s have one more shot to capture the coveted gold medal because they were unsuccessful in several previous competitions dating back to their U16 Youth Olympics campaign.
In Angelholm, Sweden, these two teams also faced off in the pre-tournament. In a game they largely controlled, USA prevailed 5-3 in that match. But with the gold medal at stake, things become considerably more interesting.
