Banhoek Chilli Oil, the premium, 100% natural chilli oil from South Africa, has announced a significant expansion in the UK market with a new listing in 324 Sainsbury’s stores nationwide, available in-store from 12 October 2024 and online from the end of October. This development strengthens the brand’s presence in the UK, following its successful entry into the market in 2022. Sainsbury’s, the second-largest supermarket chain in the UK, represents a significant milestone in Banhoek’s global growth strategy.
Established in 2017, Banhoek Chilli Oil has rapidly gained traction across several international markets, including the US, Ireland, Denmark, Germany, and Australia, in addition to its home market of South Africa, where it holds the top position in its category. This expansion into Sainsbury’s is expected to build on the brand’s growing UK footprint and capitalise on increasing consumer demand for premium, spice-led condiments.
Banhoek Chilli Oil is currently available in Original and Garlic variants. The garlic flavour—launched in the UK this year—recently earned a coveted gold star at the 2024 Great Taste Awards. The Original flavour, which will be featured in Sainsbury’s stores, is crafted from sun-dried, hand-crushed bird’s eye chillies and premium canola oil. It uses a unique induction heating method to achieve a consistent level of heat and flavour.
In line with rising consumer interest in bold and adventurous flavours, Banhoek Chilli Oil taps into the UK’s increasing demand for spice-forward condiments, according to Waitrose, which reported that at the end of 2023, its sales of spicy condiments had seen a 50% increase, reflecting a broader shift in consumer preferences toward more adventurous taste profiles.
Co-founder Ken Kinsey-Quick expressed enthusiasm about the brand’s expansion into Sainsbury’s, stating: “Securing this listing with Sainsbury’s is a significant achievement for Banhoek Chilli Oil and underscores our commitment to growing our presence in key global markets. With the UK consumer’s evolving appetite for hot and spicy flavours, we see tremendous potential for continued growth.”
As Banhoek Chilli Oil strengthens its UK distribution network, the brand remains committed to delivering high-quality, handcrafted products that meet the rising demand for authentic, flavourful condiments.

About
Banhoek Chilli Oil was created by brothers-in-law Ken Kinsey-Quick and Adi Meintjes, who were tired of the inconsistent chilli oils served in pizza restaurants. After trying more than 60 different combinations of chillies and edible oils, they created the perfect bite of flavour. What started in a small kitchen quickly moved into a garage, and in 2020, formally making its permanent home in a purpose built, state of the art factory in the heart of the Cape Winelands.
Hand-made in the Banhoek Valley near Stellenbosch, South Africa – and the winner of coveted Great Taste and Great British Food Awards – Banhoek Chilli Oil is premium canola oil infused with bird’s eye chillies grown in the unique fynbos nurtured soil, the same soil that produces world-renowned wines and rooibos tea, creating an endlessly versatile condiment for spice lovers.
