- Nearly half of students (46%) have caught someone red-handed stealing food from the fridge
- Over half (52%) of students reveal that stealing food is one of the biggest causes of arguments
- Domino’s launches the ultimate student accessory to keep food away from greedy house mates and help protect pizza
As many students begin their Fresher’s journey, Domino’s the nation’s best loved pizza company has created a new student essential, The Slice Security safe – a lockable pizza box for those precious leftover pizza slices.
It comes as research found that a staggering 65% of students who lived in shared accommodation have had their food stolen during their time at uni. Adding to the misery, the favourite and most common items nicked from the fridge included milk (45%), bread (33%) and pizza (18%) – the bare necessities for any student.
The findings also discovered nearly half (46%) of students had caught someone red-handed stealing food from the fridge, resulting in over half (52%) of students having a full-blown argument with their flat mates.
When it comes to ordering food in, pizza ranks top for most uni students (46%), so Domino’s is directly tackling food thefts with this critical food security gadget. The Slice Security safe comes equipped with a noise-activated alarm and a personalised lock keypad to put off greedy intruders and keep leftover slices protected. Gone are the days of having to write a name to claim fridge food, which a whopping 60% admit guilt to having previously done themselves!
Melanie Howe, spokesperson at Domino’s said: “There’s nothing worse than thinking you’ve got some tasty leftovers ready for the next day, only to be left fuming when someone has pinched them. For most students, that’s an all-too-common reality.
To make sure others don’t become a victim to the same misfortune, we wanted to create the Slice Security safe which fits in fridges and keeps precious leftover pizza safe from greedy housemates.”
But it’s not all doom and gloom when it comes to moving out to shared accommodation, as students over the last decade admitted living with friends (39%) and having your own space (35%) were the top things they loved about living in student accommodation. Although living in messy conditions (48%) having loud flatmates (43%) and having food stolen (36%) have all been listed as the things students worry about when sharing a space.
Many students also found ordering takeaways came with extra tasty benefits, from a guaranteed great tasting meal (45%), to not having to wash up (40%) and being able to have leftovers the day after (30%).
