INNSiDE Newcastle, part of Meliá Hotels International, has announced that local artist John Todd will exhibit his latest joint collection ‘Cover Story’ and ‘Just Jackets’ at the quayside hotel from Monday 9th September.
The upcoming exhibition by Todd will be displayed in the urban lifestyle hotel that overlooks the River Tyne and is fitting with INNSiDE Newcastle’s #StayCurious ethos – which aims to accommodate guest’s every need with considered comforts and locally inspired lifestyle experiences.
John Todd’s latest solo exhibition at INNSiDE Newcastle will feature works from two of his collections; the mixed media ‘Cover Story Collection’ and faux naive paintings from his ‘Just Jackets’ collection. Described as a nostalgic journey with a hint of truth and dash of sarcasm, both collections are influenced by Todd’s childhood memories and life as an artist living and working in the North East of England.
‘Just Jacket’ is a new collection created by Todd and features a series of paintings that are adapted from his mixed media ‘Cover Story Collection’ and explores the past and present of Geordie Culture. The pieces are influenced by the Penguin Book art genre, but bring a contemporary edge in a Faux Naive style. The works feature several fictitious book titles and incorporate the element of a pseudonym or pen name, James Park, a fictional author or novelist whose name adorns several of the new titles.
Having studied Fine Art Practices at the University of Northumbria in the 1990s, Todd uses a wide range of practical and technical abilities when approaching his artistic projects. These include printmaking, wood and stone sculpting, as well as carving and metalwork. Todd’s artwork combines mixed media and different disciplines.
Todd’s artwork is housed in The Biscuit Tin Studios in Heaton, Newcastle Upon Tyne, and has been described as “tabloid with a hint of broadsheet’ to summarise his contemporary and conceptual approach towards his art and associated genres. These include fine art photography, readymades and installation pieces, as well as graffiti and pop art.
Currently represented by several North Eastern galleries including The Biscuit Factory, Blagdon Gallery and Tallantyre Gallery, Todd has impressive exhibition experience of both group and solo shows. As well as his latest solo show at INNSiDE Newcastle, a selection of Todd’s work is set to be included in the filming of a new BBC comedy drama.
Commenting on his upcoming exhibition at INNSiDE, John Todd commented: ‘My latest solo exhibition features work from two collections that will hopefully touch a nerve, whilst also creating a smile for people experiencing the art. Growing up and studying in Newcastle, I’m excited to showcase my collections on the iconic quayside.”
INNSiDE Newcastle launched on May 17, 2021, and offers a slice of continental life in the heart of the city. Located on the historical Quayside, offering breath-taking views across the River Tyne, the Open Living Lounge is the beating heart of the hotel and leads into Gino D’Acampo Quayside, the hotel’s restaurant, bar and contemporary outdoor terrace overlooking the iconic river.
John Todd’s collection will be on display at INNSiDE Newcastle from 9th September until 28th November.
