What’s the secret to lifting the mood of northerners? Apparently, it can be a lot simpler than we think – a burger.
A recent survey* found that nearly 85% of the time, people living across the north of England feel happy after they’ve just ordered or eaten a restaurant-quality burger; so perhaps it’s time to pick up a patty!
But what are the burger eating habits of northerners?
The award-winning Manchester-based, burger delivery brand, Burgerism, has been busy surveying the nation to understand more about our takeaway habits, after all it’s that time of year when 30% are most likely to order a burger online.
Northerner’s best burger set-up
So, what do northerners look for when creating the best burger? Well, despite a rise in alternative patty options being available, the traditional beef burger remains top choice for over half of northerners. However, more northerners are likely to opt for a vegan patty, compared to southerners.
Pickles remain a divisive topping, and 45% northerners are likely to remove, higher than the national average. But dairy remains key to the perfect burger, with over half of northerners keeping cheese on their burger.
Sorting the sauces: the top three
It’s an age-old debate: what sauce are you choosing or maybe vetoing? Taking the big question to the nation, Burgerism reveals the top three burger sauces of the north.
Coming in at number one is ketchup (58%), followed by mayonnaise (56%) and stealing the last spot on the ‘sauce podium’ is BBQ (46%).
But who can handle the heat on their burger? Northerners. Northerners like it hot with over a third adding spicy buffalo sauce compared with just a quarter of southerners.

When it comes to unveiling the why and when of burger eating, it’s no surprise to hear 40% of northerners look to a mouth-watering patty when hungover.
And the temptation of a weekend treat gets to half of northerners, so don’t feel guilty when you next take to your delivery takeaway app to have one delivered straight to your door.
