Everything that makes Mediterranean cuisine so celebrated is included in a Greek breakfast, whether that’s colour, seasonality, nutrition or a warm welcome. Providing the perfect start to the day, it might just be one of Greece’s best-kept secrets. But over in west London that secret is definitely out thanks to Vori, the modern taverna that celebrates all that is special about Greek food, wine and hospitality.
Vori’s owners – three brothers who just happen to be the Greek street food pioneers behind the much-missed Hungry Donkey in Spitalfields – have drawn on their own experiences to create a superb breakfast offering that embodies the soulful essence of their birthplace as well as championing ingredients that are high in nutritional value and a great source of energy.
Offering something truly different, breakfast here is entirely home-made. Highlights include the traditional Vori-baked koulouri, round sesame bread served with whipped, warm wild thyme honey butter together with traditional Greek egg dishes such as kagianas (pictured), scrambled eggs with basil, tomatoes & feta; fourtalia, a traditional omelette from Andros with caramelised red onion pork sausages & potato and pastourmali, an omelette made with pasturma air-dried cured beef.
Not forgetting of course Giaourti, creamy Greek yogurt with seasonal berries, wild thyme honey & crunchy walnuts.
Provenance is key; Vori uses rich egg yolk free-range eggs from the multi-award-winning St Ewe and sausages from its own neighbours, Lidgate’s family butcher’s, which prides itself on its ethically sourced organic and rare breed meat.
Coffee naturally takes pride of place too – Vori’s delicious brew is courtesy of Catalyst Coffee, run by two brothers who roast their own blends in the basement of their coffee shop in Holborn.
Vori offers two distinct and equally memorable breakfast experiences: Proino, served Mondays to Fridays from 8.30am until 11.45am, and Dekatiano, a more expansive weekend brunch, from 9am until 1.45pm.
