As far as growing up is concerned, running to the shop with your weeks’ pocket money to buy a mix-up of sweets is likely to be many adults’ favourite childhood memory.
Fast-forward a few years and the old classics are still firm favourites, but a new wave of delicious treats have made a grand entrance into the market that are proving decent rivals for the existing tribe.
Not only have new (sometimes purposely awful!) flavours giving the old sweets a run of their money, but the selection of options available is also rivalling the competition.
We’ve shared some of the best sweets of all time – both old, and new – to get your teeth stuck into.
1. Cookie Dough Fudge
Fudge is known as one of the classic types of sweet, but the modern twist on it includes a very popular, modern flavouring… Cookie dough.
Being the one-shop-stop for a two-in-one taste sensation that it is, there was absolutely no doubt in our, and probably your minds, that cookie dough fudge deserves to be the first mentioned on our list.
2. Haribo Giant Strawbs
Ah, Haribo. Now, while there is a wide variety of everyone’s favourite branded bag of sweets with equally broad opinions of which is the best, we thought we’d play it safe and go with something that everyone can at least agree on is one of Haribo’s best…Their Giant Strawbs.
Sweet, distinct and easily recognisable; we’re sure everyone can recall the last time they tucked into one of these delightful treats.
3. Jelly Belly Bean Boozled Jelly Beans
For most people, sweets are nice little sweet or sour indulgence. But for a brave few, it’s all about questionable tastes and humorous facial expressions when a friend gets a nasty surprise!
Everyone has a fond memory whether it was a friend or perhaps unfortunately, yourself, who was treated to a seemingly harmless jelly bean, when in a matter of seconds, the repulsive taste of rotten egg, canned dog food or vomit would create a priceless expression for all to enjoy.
4. Peanut Butter M&M’s
As difficult as these can be to find for a lot of people in the UK, that hasn’t stumped the nation’s taste for these this lovely spin on the traditional M&M.
Like many of the entries of this list, this sweet takes full advantage of the ingenious notion of bringing together two already individual taste sensations and seamlessly blending the two together into one magnificent spectacle for the taste buds.
5. Toffee Nibbles
Speaking of sweets, there’s no surprise that we had to include something of the toffee variety on this list. And as it’s toffee nibbles, you probably knew it was coming eventually.
Bite-sized milk chocolate, caramel, and biscuit blends. Every little ingredient that makes up this glorious feast for the taste buds are perfectly delicious on their own, but when combined together, you know you’re in for a treat.
6. Sherbet Fountain
A definitive icon of anyone’s childhood that was dominated by the cravings of an insistent sweet tooth; this delightful combo of liquorice and sherbet dip has a firm place amongst any old-school pantheon of sugary goodness!
Whether you love it or hate it, Barratt’s sherbet sensation is still going strong today as it has for some decades now, and that is no coincidence.
7. Vanilla Fudge Bars
In terms of taste sensation, there isn’t anything vanilla about these delicious treats. There’s a reason why fudge is a recurring feature on our list, and the most likely reason is something we can probably all agree upon: it’s just so good!
Whether you savour the bar or take your gluttonous nature of the leash at the mere sight of one of these sweet-tooth soothers, there’s something to enjoy for everyone.
With the number of sweets available set to increase, we’re excited to see which new variations are coming!
