Hair textures can be classified into three categories. Fine, medium, and coarse. You can easily test your hair texture by simply taking a single hair in between your fingers. If you cannot feel the strand then you have fine hair, if you can feel it, you have medium hair, and if you can feel a strong thick strand, you have coarse.
If you were born with fine hair, unfortunately, you cannot change the volume of your hair and make it thicker. What you can do is make it look thicker by following these simple tricks on how to make fine hair look more volumized.
1. Washing your hair in reverse
Ideally, you should condition your hair every day to keep it healthy and smooth but sometimes, conditioning can make your hair too slick that it cannot hold a style. Try conditioning your hair before shampooing, this will create an ideal texture for styling so you can add more volume to your hair.
2. Use dry shampoo on clean hair
Dry shampoo is normally used in day-old hair to remove the excess oils when you decide not to wash your hair. But, dry shampoo is not only great for reviving oily hair it is also great as a texturizing spray. Your hair might look flat and lifeless after washing but you can add texture to it to make it perfect for styling. Just make sure to hold the bottle as far away from your hair as possible to not dull down the shine of your hair.
3. Adding mousse
Using mousse is also a great way to add texture to your hair. An egg-size amount of mouse is enough for fine hair. Use a hairbrush and take a small amount of product and comb through damp hair from roots to tip. Repeat until you’re done. The hairbrush trick is used to make sure that the hair is evenly coated with mousse and avoid the crunchy and sticky texture it gives when the product is not applied correctly.
4. Sleeping with hair rollers
The Hair Central article says that sleeping with hair rollers work by applying tension to your hair to curl it.Just make sure to moisturize your hair to avoid breakage especially if you have fine-textured hair. Hair rollers are also a great alternative for a curling iron because it does not apply heat to your hair that can cause more damage to it. You just need a lot of patience for it but the results are definitely worth it.
5. Fill in your roots
Root powders are a great way to hide gray hair but they’re also great to add the illusion of fuller hair. Simply take a small brush and apply root powder to your part or on areas where your scalp peeks through. But, be sure to pick a color closest to your roots to achieve the effect.
6. Fake it with a thicker pony
The illusion for a thicker, fuller ponytail can be achieved by using a simple claw clip. First, tie your hair in a high ponytail. Then, divide it into two sections and put the claw clip in the middle. Lastly, slightly tease the top part of the hair to hide the claw clip. If you don’t have any claw clips lying around, bobby pins will do the trick as well. Just put two bobby pins underneath your ponytail to prop it up and make it look fuller and thicker.
7. Tease your roots
By teasing your roots, you give off the illusion of a much fuller, thicker hair. Take a small section of your hair, prop it up and start gently brushing towards your roots. Do it as if you’re kind of like reverse combing your hair. Repeat until you have the desired height and shape. After that, smoothen out the top portion of your hair to hide the teased section underneath.
8. Ask for layers
Having long hair especially for fine-textured hair can make it look flat due to the weight of it pulling your hair down. Although it is advisable to have medium to short hair for this type of texture, you can still have long hair. Next time you’re in a salon, ask your hairstylist for layers. This is a great way to add texture and volume, especially for long fine hair.
Having fine hair is not a curse. In fact, it has its perks. You have much less hair to deal with, you shed less, it’s easier to wash, it dries faster, just to name a few. You just need some tricks to give off the illusion of a fuller, thicker hair. Embrace it because with the right styling you can definitely rock that fine hair of yours.
