OK so you might have heard that phrase lots of times but it really is true. Not sure? Then let’s look at some of the reasons why this particular life philosophy does work.
It’s important to understand how clutter can affect both your home and your own wellbeing. A clean home that is free of clutter and is tidy and organised can have a very powerful and positive effect on you, your mood and your relationships.
On the other hand, if your home is a little chaotic and filled with clutter, you will probably be wondering where to start to break out of this untidy habit and achieve the tidy home, tidy mind equilibrium.
Out of clutter comes chaos
If you find yourself always surrounded with a ridiculous amount of clutter, then you’ll probably find that subconsciously your mind will reflect the state of the physical space you occupy but worry not, there are some really simple solutions to help those who find themselves living in a world full of clutter.
You know all those photos you took and the pictures you bought that are still lying around? Measure them, get them framed and soon they will find just the spot to show themselves off and bring you memories at the same time.
Have you got a mantelpiece or shelf that is crammed with ornaments that collect a lot of dust? Do you really want them all on display? Is it time some of them were recycled by either putting in the appropriate recycling bin or taking them to a charity shop or car boot sale?
Less mess, less stress
Do you sometimes wake up and feel overwhelmed by the sheer amount of stuff that surrounds you? Does the thought of all those clothes and that unwashed laundry on the floor cause you to feel stressed? Is the collection of clutter a constant cause of unease when you’re at home? Imagine what it would be like to walk across a room without stepping on or around something. Picture cooking a meal in a kitchen where there are no dirty dishes in sight and everything has a home. The more you tidy things up and put them away, the more your stress will lift until you reach a lovely feeling of calmness.
Don’t mess up your relationships
If you and your family live in an untidy and chaotic household, this could very well have a negative influence on how you all treat each other. Does anyone else help with the housework or do they all expect you to pick up after them? This can eventually not only be tiring but cause situations where because emotions are heightened, relationships can become strained. Putting off doing things will have the same effect too.
Teach your children well
Instead of allowing your children to pick up your own bad habits when it comes to being orderly and organised, even when they are very young it’s good idea to encourage them to be tidy. Don’t let your house become so messy that children are unable to find their toys because this will make playtime a lot less fun and probably lead to a few tantrums too.
Don’t be ashamed of yourself
Do you ever feel so embarrassed about the state of your home that you never invite people round or put people off calling on you? These are very good reasons to clean up your clutter, get your house in order and enjoy time with your friends and family in your own tidy home that you can take pride in instead of being ashamed of.
Work at it
If you work from home or have a hobby that requires space then being surrounded by clutter really won’t inspire you very much or help you to concentrate because you’ll probably be thinking that you really should tidy the place up. And then if you do decide to have a tidy up, you’ll lose out on working hours.
Sleep on it
How can you expect to have a good night’s sleep in a world of clutter and mess? It’s hardly a calm, soothing environment and what’s worse is that it will all still be there in the morning.
Svetlana Lungu from Why Matters Shopify agency says having a tidy home really doesn’t have to take up a lot of your time once you put your mind to it. Developing small habits and adding these to your day to day routine will mean things will be put away in their proper place and very soon you mind will become as uncluttered as your home.
