A mother-of-four, battling social anxiety and an exhaustingly monotonous routine, embarked on an extraordinary journey to break free from her limitations. Jen Barton, residing in Clapham, London, decided to undertake 30 challenges in 30 days, a decision that led her from sword fighting and Samurai workshops to life drawing covered in neon paint.
Jen, a freelance journalist, felt her individuality fading amidst her role as a mother and her struggles with social anxiety and ADHD. Fueled by a desire for change, she set out on a mission to reclaim her spontaneity and zest for life.
“It’s easy to get stuck in a routine as a mum, to let the anxiety hold you back from trying new things,” shared Jen. “But I knew the spontaneous woman I once was still existed inside of me, and this challenge seemed perfect.”
As a mum and freelancer working from home, Jen’s social anxiety often kept her confined indoors, but this challenge pushed her boundaries. The diverse activities included sword fighting, Samurai workshops, life drawing, and even beekeeping, among others. She immersed herself in these experiences, discovering new aspects of herself that had long been tucked away.
Despite initial nervousness, Jen found the energy to push through the challenge, even participating in additional events, making her total count 36. She took part in activities like ecstatic dance, public speaking classes, whacking dance, and even a forest bathing session.
Jen’s journey was sponsored by Eventbrite as part of their Get The F**k Out challenge, an initiative aimed at encouraging people to break out of their comfort zones and embrace new experiences. Through this journey, Jen not only rekindled her own spirit but also inspired her children and others to step out of their comfort zones.
“This has changed my life,” Jen declared. “My kids were so used to seeing me at home, but it was nice for them to see me go out and do things too. They are my everything, and it is so much better for them to see their parents getting out of the house rather than locking myself away.”
In a world that often challenges mental well-being, Jen’s story offers a glimpse of transformation and the power of stepping out into the unknown.
